Once you've done a few Quick Roasts and you're comfortable with the workflow, there are two natural next steps: switching to Adaptive Roast and adding a temperature probe.
Adaptive Roast — What's Different
Quick Roast gives you a suggested profile and you log milestones. Adaptive Roast goes further — it builds on your previous roasts with a specific bean and generates real-time suggestions during the roast based on what worked best last time.
Here's the flow:
- Select your bean — same as Quick Roast.
- Bean analysis — the app shows you a detailed breakdown of the bean's characteristics (origin, processing, density, moisture) and how those affect the roast approach.
- Profile generation — instead of a generic profile for the roast level, Adaptive Roast creates one tuned to this specific bean and your roaster's calibration.
- During the roast — you get live DTR%, development time, and sensory cues. If you've roasted this bean before, the app compares your current roast to your best previous result in real time.
- Post-roast — full quality scoring with per-metric breakdown showing where you nailed it and where to adjust next time.
The key difference: Quick Roast treats every roast as standalone. Adaptive Roast builds a history with each bean and gets smarter about suggestions the more you roast it.
When to Switch
There's no wrong time, but Adaptive Roast clicks best when:
- You've roasted the same bean 2-3 times and want to dial it in
- You want to understand why a roast worked, not just that it worked
- You're curious about DTR, development time, and roast quality metrics
If you're happy with Quick Roast and just want good coffee, that's completely fine — it's not a lesser mode. Adaptive Roast is there when you want more depth.
Adding a Temperature Probe (Fresh Roast Users)
The Fresh Roast SR540 and SR800 don't have a built-in bean temperature probe — the display shows chamber air temp, which can be 25-50°F above actual bean temp. Adding an external thermocouple gives you real bean temperature data, which makes your profiles much more precise and repeatable.
The go-to setup: Mastech MS6514
The Mastech MS6514 is a dual-input thermocouple reader that connects via USB. It's what most Fresh Roast owners use for temperature monitoring, and RoastSource has built-in support for it.
What you need:
- Mastech MS6514 digital thermometer (dual K-type input, USB output)
- K-type thermocouple probe — a thin one that fits into the roasting chamber without blocking bean movement
- USB cable to connect the Mastech to your phone or computer
The Mastech reads bean temperature and environment temperature simultaneously. RoastSource auto-detects it when connected and overlays live temperature data on top of the milestone-based profile.
With vs. Without a Probe
Without a probe — You roast by milestones: charge, yellowing, first crack, drop. The app generates profiles using roasting science and your roaster's calibration data. This works well and is how most home roasters operate.
With a probe — You get a real-time temperature curve layered on top of milestones. RoR (Rate of Rise) becomes a live measurement instead of a calculated estimate. Your profiles become more precise and more comparable across sessions.
You don't need a probe to roast great coffee. But if you want to understand exactly what's happening inside the roaster, it's the single best upgrade you can make — more useful than any roaster mod.
Razzo V5T Users
If you're running a Razzo V5T extension tube on your SR800, it has a built-in K-type thermocouple port. RoastSource automatically adjusts timing calibration for the V5T's different airflow characteristics — just select it in Settings → Equipment.
