Now that v7.0 is shipped, I wanted to share some workflows that I use daily and that came out of pilot testing. These aren't in the help docs yet — they're the "how I actually use it" tips.
Workflow: Track the Same Bean Over Time
If you buy the same green coffee repeatedly (e.g., a Sweet Maria's offering you reorder), add each batch as a separate inventory entry with the purchase date in the notes. When you roast, select the current batch. Over time, your ratings and roast history build a picture of how your technique improves with that specific bean — or how the coffee itself changes across crop years.
Workflow: Compare Roast Levels
Roast the same bean at light, medium, and dark. RoastSource generates different profiles for each level (with correct DTR targets). After you rate all three, go to Ratings → By Roast Level to see how the scores compare. This is the fastest way to find the sweet spot for a new origin.
Workflow: Use Display Modes
If you're new, start in Craft mode — it shows only Inventory, Roasting, and Brewing with a clean, focused interface. As you get comfortable, switch to Journey to unlock Ratings, Blending, and Equipment. Science mode shows everything, including the full roast science data and Java Geek module.
You can switch anytime in Settings → Display Mode. Your data doesn't change — it's just which modules are visible.
Tips
- Back up your data. Settings → Sync lets you back up to a local folder. Do this before you have 50 roasts and haven't backed up once. (I learned this the hard way.)
- Use the Quick Roast flow for speed, Adaptive Roast for precision. Quick Roast is milestone-based and fast. Adaptive Roast adds real-time suggestions during the roast based on your previous best result with that bean.
- Check the Help drawer. Every module has a help panel (the ? icon) with quick-start guides, workflows, and links to relevant community discussions.
What workflows have you developed? Anything you wish the app made easier? Post it here — or in Feature Requests if it's something you want built.
